Roshan Biography

Roshan is a famous music director of the black and white era of Indian music. As a successful Bollywood composer, his best works include Taj Mahal and Barsaat ki raat. His other notable works include Aarti, Mamta, Anokhi raat, Devar and Chitralekha. More than a successful music director, he is most known to new generation as the paternal grandfather of mega star Hritik Roshan. Roshan’s two sons – Rajesh Roshan and Rakesh Roshan are also significant attributes of Bollywood industry. Though he was an active music director during 50’s and 60’s, he died at a comparatively younger age of 50 leaving behind many incomplete tunes!

Roshan was born in Punjab in the year 1917, but came to Mumbai in search of work. He joined as an assistant music director of Music Composer Khawaja Khurshid Anwar and the first movie was Singaar. He struggled a lot in the industry to get opportunities and his life changed so quickly soon after he met Kidar Sharma. Nekhi aur badi in 1949 was his first association with Kidar Sharma. Though the movie was a flop, his work as a composer was noted and he began to get opportunities in Bollywood. During early 50’s he worked with Mukesh and Talaq Mehmood most and great lyricists – Indeevar and Anand Bakshi started their career through his compositions. Bakshi’s debut movie was Bhala Aadmi.

Among all her notable works, songs of Taj Mahal are noted most, the songs for which he won Filmfare awards. Lata Mangeshkar was the most sought female voice of Roshan with whom he has delivered many hit songs like ‘Jo waada kiya woh nifana padega’ and ‘Pau choole ne do’ of Taj Mahal, Saari saari raat of Bahu begum, Duniye kare sawal of Barsaat ki raat, Rahe na rahe hum and Chupa Lo Yun Dil Mein Pyar Mera of Mamta, Mujhe mil gaya bahana of Bheegi raat and Kabhi to milenge baharom ki manzil of Aarthi.  In fact music of almost all movies of Pradeep Kumar, Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari was given by Roshan. During 60’s Mohd Rafi was given more opportunities than the rest.  In Baharon Mein – a duet of Rafi and Asha Bholse is a lovely song of the movie Mamta.
