Roop Kumar Rathod Biography

Roop Kumar Rathod is a famous ghazalist, music director and playback singer. He belongs to the musical family of late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod (his father), Vinod Rathod (singer) and Shravan Rathod (music director). His wife Sunali Rathod is also a talented singer, and they both together have done many concerts and albums. It includes many foreign countries too and their collaboration is very popular. He has also lent his voice to other regional language movies in Guajarati, Bhojpuri, Asameese, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali. His most popular Bollywood songs are Tere liye of Veer Zaara, Khamosh raat of Thakshak, Maula mere maula mere of Anwar, Tujhmein rab dikhtha hai of  Rab ne bana di Jodi, E subha of Baaz a bird in danger and Sandese aathe hai of Border.    

Born as the fourth son of Dhrupad family, he got his primary training from father itself. He is an expert in tabla and used to assist in many ghazal concerts during 1980’s. As a singer he debut with Laxmikanth Pyarelal composition – Mein tera aashiq hoom of Sanjay Dutt – Sridevi starrer Gumrah. ‘Sandesa aata hai’ the most popular song of golden jubilee year of Indian Independence was sung by Roop Kumar Rathod along with Sonu Nigam. That song gave him star screen awards nomination too. This song was a major breakthrough in the filmy career of Roop Kumar Rathod. The pair of rathod and Sonu Nigam repeated the maguc again with another patriotic song - Zindagi maut na ban jaaye of Sarfarosh . In 2004, when Madan Mohan’s unused tunes were given new life and used in Yash Chopra’s movie ‘Veer Zaara’, Roop Kumar Rathod was called to sing its first song. Thus the song ‘Tere liye’ exclusively belongs to him, along with Lata Mangeshkar. Shah Rukh Khan and Preeti Zinta were featured in this song as young and old people, who meet after years.

In many movies, Roop Kumar Rathod appears in the song also, as the singer. He has sung the song ‘Venmathiye’ of Minnale in 2001 and ‘Pookkal pookkum’ of hit movie Madrasipattanam in 2010. His other hit Hindi movies include Sandese of Border, Tum se juda hokar hamein of Kareeb, Parody song of Hum saath saath hain, Zindagi maut na ban jaaye of Sarfarosh, Yeh dua dua of Tumsa nahi dekha, Barsaat ke mausam of Naajayaz, Wada jo kiya of Raja, Shikayat hai of Jism, Kudi kawari of International khiladi, Seene mein sulagtha of Laawariz, Piya of Tanu weds Manu and Barson yaaro of London Dreams.
