Rituparno Ghosh Biography

Rituparno Ghosh was a famous Bengali film director who is regarded as the most versatile film Indian director of the past one decade or so. He was active in the industry for past two decades. But Ghosh died on 30 May 2013 in Kolkata after a heart attack at an age of 49 leaving behind a lot to give to his fans and well wishers. In his career spanning almost two decades he won 12 national and many international awards. He has received numerous nominations in many Indian and international awards as well. Most of his movies are regarded as the land mark movies of Indian cinema and the best in the past one decade or so. His best movies are Chokher Bali, Abohoman, Raincoat, Dahan, The Last Lear, Chitrangada, Asukh, Titli, Shubho Mahurat, Unishe April, Antarmahal, Arekti Premer Golpo, Sob Charitro Kalponik, The Last Lear and Utsab. Rituparno Ghos was a researcher and admirer of Rabindranath Tagore and made three films based on his works - Choker Bali (2003), Nokuadubi (2010) and Chitrangada (2012). In 1999 film Asukh, Ghosh made Tagore an invisible character of his movie.

 

It’s reviewed that Rituparno’s films were women oriented and explore female feelings beautifully. He was able to draw on celluloid canvas women’s emotions best than any other Indian director. He explored transgender lifestyles during the last several years of his life and openly declared that he loved to remain as woman than man. During his last public appearances, he appeared in woman’s accessories and makeup. He was one of the very few homosexual people in Indian cinema who never hid it as secret.

 

Ghosh made his directorial debut in the year 1992 with Hirer Angti. His second film Unishe April with Aparna Sen and Debashree Roy in the leading role won two National Film Awards in 1995, including Best Feature Film. Then began a new era in India where we see this director accumulating all major awards of National awards frequently and claiming many international awards as well. A few of the awards include - National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Dahan in 1998, National Film Award for Best Direction in 2001 for Utsab, National Film Award for Best Direction in 2010 for Abohoman and National Film Awards - Special Jury Award for Chitrangada in the last National awards (2012).
