Renji Panicker Biography

Renji Panicker is a noted screenwriter and filmmaker of Malayalam cinema. He was a journalist before joining mainstream film industry and he made his debut directorial venture, Bharatchandran IPS with Suresh Gopi in 2005. His second movie as a director was Roudram with Mammootty in lead role. He gained popularity as the screenwriter of Malayalam cinema, known for the works – Pathram, Dubai, Thalastaanam, Lelam, Praja, The king, Sthalathe Pradhana Payyans, Dr. Pasupathy, Mafia and Ekalavyan. At present he is the MD of ‘Metrovaartha’, Malayalam daily.

He is known most for action packed scripts which features Suresh Gopi in the lead role. He is better known as the screenwriter of mega blockbuster Commissioner (1994), which made Suresh Gopi an overnight star and new superstar of Mollywood. The film’s dialogues are still popular for its punch and power packed performance by the lead actor. Most recently in 2014, he started his new innings as an actor portraying the comic role of Nazriya Nazim’s father in the first successful movie of 2014, Om Shanthi Oshaana which gained praises from critics as well as audience.

He took Master’s in Journalism from Kerala University. Then he started his career as a reporter for various magazines. While interviewing Shaji Kailas in one such occasion, it opened his way to film field as a scriptwriter. He has been associated with Shaji Kailas and Joshy throughout 1990’s and made his first film, Bharatchandran IPS, the sequel of Commissioner in 2005. In 2012, he wrote the script of ‘The King & the Commissioner’, which includes the lead characters of two of his early scripts – King and Commissioner played by Mammootty and Suresh Gopi respectively. In 2014, he made a promising debut as an actor through Om Shanthi Oshaana. His humorous character was one of the best powerful performances of the movie.
