Rekha Biography

Rekha’s position is a Bollywood diva counted among the top actresses all time. Age and time have never overpowered her; she is simply grace even at the age of 60+. Though she is named as a sex symbol of Bollywood screen, she has proved her talent as a successful actress through the range of characters she has played on screen. She came from South and ruled Bollywood about 2 decades or so. She is remembered most for her role in Umrao Jaan (1980) for which she got National award. Other memorable roles include Khushsurat, Izzazat, Muquaddar ka sikander, Silsila, Khoon bhara maang, Ghar, Kahani Kismat ki, Vijeta, Utsav, Rampur ki lakshman, Baseera, Do anjane, Kalyug, Krish, Koi mil gaya, Mr.Natwarlal, Ek hi bhool, Khiladiyon ka khiladi, Kamsutra, Gora aur kaala, Pran jaaye par vachan na jaaye, Dharam karam, Jaani dushman, Suhaag, Zubeidaa, Dil hai tumhara and Ganga ki Saugandh.  She has remained an ageless beauty and a mystery among divas of Bollywood.

Her father Gemini Ganesan was a successful hero of Tamil movies. She was born out of wed lock, Gemini’s relation with Pushpavalli. It took years for Gemini to accept her as his daughter and by this time, she drifted far away from her father. She debuted big screen as a child actress in a Telugu movie and as heroine in 1969 Kannada movie Goa Dalli CID 99. Same year she debut Bollywood; but due to a kiss scene controversy, the movie was not released till 1979 as Do Shikari. Her first released Bollywood movie is Sawan Badon, which was a hit. She was not glamorous that time and she put a lot of effort to place herself among the divas of Bollywood. That makes Rekha so special.

Her films paired with Big B were huge successes in Bollywood. There were rumours that they had a close relationship, though both have denied it. Audience always loved to see them as pair onscreen and Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha pair has been one among the most celebrated pairs of Bollywood. The mystery surrounding them has not lost its charm even after 30 years! They worked together for Mr.Natwarlal, Suhag, Muquaddar ka sikander, Do angane and Silsile. She won best actress supporting award at Filmfare for her role of a courtesan in the movie Muquaddar ka sikander.

Age made her more mature and she did many award winning performances. Umrao jaan, Izzazat and Ghar can be included in the list of Rekha’s best performance. She has won Filmfare best actress award for Khubsurat and Khoonbhari mang and supporting actress award for Muquaddar ka sikander and Khiladiyon ka khiladi.
