Rawal Ratan Singh Biography

Rawal Ratan Singh was the 42nd ruler of Mewar who ruled from 1302-03 AD. He was a Rajput belonging to the Guhilote clan. Rani Padmini was the queen of Chittor and wife of King Rawal Ratan Singh, known for her bewitching beauty and the story of their love and death is referred to in Padmavat, an epic poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540 CE. After a few wins, Rawal Ratan Singh finally received a defeat from Alauddin Khilji in AD 1303 who attacked Chittor after hearing of the beauty of Queen Rani Padmini. Singh was a brave and noble warrior, apart from a lovable warrior. Ratan Singh was believed to have 2 wives – Nagmati and Padmavathi, while folklore says he has 15 wives of whom Padvati was his last consort.

He married Padmini after defeating Malkhan Singh, a Rajput King in swayamvar. Thus Padmini was taken to Chittoor as second queen. Rawal had one singer in the court named Raghav who acted as informer to police and used evil tactics.  Rawal threw him out of his kingdom and to revenge, he informed the sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khilji about the beauty of queen. Alauddin reached Chittor to find that the fort to be heavily defended. He sent a word to King that he looked upon Padmini as his sister and wanted to meet her. Emperor allowed him to see her mirror image and Sulthan believed that this beauty deserved to be in his harem.

Sultan managed to imprison the king. However kings’ warriors managed to free the king.  Sulthan later attacked the kingdom and decided to lay siege to the fort as they couldn’t break it. Gradually supplies within the fort were depleted and finally King Ratan Singh gave orders to Rajputs to fight till end. On understanding that Rajputs cannot defeat Sulthan’s troupe, Rani Padmini decided to commit the divine suicide jauhar with other Rajput women. When Sultan’s troupe defeated Rajputs including King Ratan Singh and entered the kingdom, Rani Padmini and other women had already performed jauhar to save their honour.
