Ravi Shankar Prasad Biography

Ravi Shankar Prasad is a politician and deputy Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha at present. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the third term. He is a lawyer by profession and a distinguished senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India. He is a member of BJP and RSS. He held the position of Minister of State in the Ministry of Coal and Mines, the Ministry of Law and Justice, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting under the leadership of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He is the son of Thakur Prasad, one of the founders of the Jan Sangh, which is now known by the name BJP.

Ravi Shankar Prasad was born in Patna on August 30, 1954. His father Thakur Prasad was a senior advocate at the Patna High Court and one of the founding members of Bharatiya janatha party. Prasad completed graduation, post-graduation and LLB degrees from Patna University. Prasad began his political career as a student leader in the 1970s. His first active participation in student’s circle was against Indira Gandhi government. He worked in Bihar under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan and got imprisoned during the Emergency. He had a long term association with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and has held many honorable posts.

Prasad has been practising at the Patna High Court since 1980. He became Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India in 2000. Prasad was the main lawyer arguing the Public Interest Litigation against Laloo Prasad Yadav in the Fodder scam and Bitumen scam cases. In 2010, Prasad was a lawyer in Ayodhya title suit where he was a lawyer for Hindu groups. He became MP in 2000 and became the Minister of State (Coal and Mines) in 2001.
