Ravi Baswani Biography

Ravi Baswani was a comic actor of Hindi cinema. He has also done a few television serials for Doordarshan. He is most remembered for the roles - Sai Paranjpe's Chashme Buddoor (1981) and Kundan Shah's comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), for which he won Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 1984. He played supporting roles (of friend) in both these movies and both are remembered for its comic flavours. He played the roommate cum friend of Farooq Shaikh in Chashme Buddoor while he played the idiot friend of Naseeruddin Shah in all time best comedy movie - Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. In a career spanning 30 years he has done only 30 films. Yet he has made a position among the best comedians of Bollywood all time and was lucky enough to work with famous directors also. He worked most during the era of 1980’s.

 

Ravi was born on September 29, 1946 in Delhi. He did his graduation from Kirori Mal College (KMC), Delhi University and was active in drama during college days. He made his successful debut with the movie, Chashme Buddoor in 1981. His second noted work was Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, which gave him a Filmfare award as well. Though a few, he has appeared in a few more memorable roles in movies like Ab Ayega Mazaa, Ghar sansaar, Return of Jewel Thief, Chotta chetan, Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Bunty aur bubli, Chhota Chetan, Lucky: No Time for Love, Antony kaun hai, Chal mere bhai, Jaan Tere Naam, Laadla and Kundan Shah’s another venture – Kabhi haan kabhi naa.

 

His noted television serial was Idhar Udhar, telecasted in Doordarshan during late 1980’s. In 2004, he became the teacher and coordinator of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He has also appeared in Naseeruddin Shah's first directorial venture, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota, with whom he has worked in Jaane bhi do yaaro. Baswani died following a massive heart attack on July 27, 2010 in Haldwani. He was in search for shooting location for his first directorial venture. He was unmarried.
