Ratna Pathak Biography

Ratna Pathak is a successful theatre artist and film actress of Bollywood. She is the daughter of veteran theatre actress of Gujarat and supporting actress of Hindi cinema, Dina Pathak. Her husband is also a talented theatre artist and great actor of silver screen – Nasirudeen Shah. Her sister Supriya Pathak and brother-in-law Pankaj Kapur are also successful film actors and theatre artists. Along with her husband, she has acted in many plays, ads as well as movies. She was a popular actress of Doordarshan serials during 80’s. Recent one among the list is block buster hit Jaane tu ya jaane naa, where both played the comic characters of dead husband and alive wife in the movie. Her role as co-actress of Mithun Chakravarthy in the movie Golmaal 3 is one among the best performances of her recent movies. This movie also proved to be a blockbuster hit.  Her son, Vivaan Shah has already debut in Bollywood with Vishal Bhardwaj’s movie 7 Khoon maaf where he played the role of one among the six husbands of Priyanka Chopra.

She had started theatre work before entering into movies. She has taken a degree from National school of drama, Delhi. She started her film career with Mandi in the year 1983. This movie was critically well acclaimed movie directed by Shyam Benegal. Her most memorable movies include Jaane tu ya jaane naa, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Encounter: The Killing, The perfect murder, The Coffin Maker, Aladdin, Heat and Dust, Golmaal 3, Mirch masala, Mandi, Yun hota to kya hota and Paheli. She has worked for both Hindi and English movies.

Among her popular television serials, the sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’s name comes first. She played the role of Maya Sarabhai in this tele serial. She is also known for her perfect timing in comedy and that proved to be the most successful factor in her success too. Her popular tele serials include - Filmi Chakkar, Tara and Movers & Shakers.

In 2005, she has won Indian Telly Awards and ITA Award for Best Actress – Comedy for Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.  Next year also she was nominated for Indian Television Academy Awards in the same category for same sitcom. She has won multiple nominations at many film award functions for her roles in Jaane tu ya jaane naa and Golmaal 3.
