Rao Birender Singh Biography

Rao Birender Singh was a politician from Haryana who served as the second chief minister of the state. He also served as a cabinet minister of Indira Gandhi’s Congress government. He held the portfolio of Food, Agriculture, Rural development, Irrigation and Civil supply. He was a scion of Rewari Dynasty who lived during the period - 20 February 1921-30 September 2009. He also served as the first speaker of Haryana Vidhan Sabha. His son Rao Inderjit Singh is a prominent politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party who currently serves as a cabinet minister of Modi’s government.

He was born in the village of Nangal Pathani to Bahal Singh. He belonged to the lineage of Rao Tula Ram, a Yadav dynasty family. He completed graduation from St. Stephen’s College and enrolled in the Territorial Army during the Second World War. He got associated with Indian national congress and politics in the early 1960s. He won state elections for the first time and was inducted to Pratap Singh Kairon Government in 1962. He was given the portfolios Revenue and Consolidation, PWD, Irrigation and Power. He won state assembly elections in 1966 as a member of MLC and retained power for one Jupiter year.

He became the first speaker of Haryana Vidhan Sabha after its secession from Punjab and went on to become the second CM of the state in 1967. Singh established the Vishal Haryana Party the same year and got elected to the 5th Lok Sabha in 1971 from the Mahendragarh constituency as a candidate of his newly formed party. In 1978 he merged with Congress and following his re-election in 1980, he became a cabinet minister. In 1984, he was re-elected to the 8th Lok Sabha, though he resigned the position later.
