Ranjith Sankar Biography

Ranjith Sankar is a film producer, director and screenwriter of Malayalam cinema whose all the four movies released till now are box office hits. His most recent hit is Punyalan Agarbattis, released in 2013 which starred Jayasurya, Nyla Usha and Aju Varghese in lead roles. His first full-fledged movie as a director was the thriller, Passenger released in 2009 which was declared a super hit at box office. He was praised well for its freshness in direction and script. His rest two released movies are Arjunan Sakshi (2009) and Molly Aunty Rocks (2012). He received Asianet Film awards and World Malayali Council - Kairali Awards for Best screenplay for Passenger. He also received Special Jury Award for direction from Kerala Film Critics’ association for the movie, Passenger. The same movie bagged numerous awards for best debut director and screenplay as well.  

He was born in Thrissur on a Valentine’s Day. He completed B Tech in IT from Kothamangalam and worked as an IT professional for some time before entering film field. He never worked as an assistant under any film director and made his director entry to film world as a screenwriter and director of the movie, Passenger in 2009. The movie starred super star Dileep, along with veteran and versatile actor Srinivasan and Mamta Mohandas in pivot roles. He thought of writing screenplay only in the beginning. But later he changed his decision to direct the movie also, as he felt that one can bring 100% perfection to the story only if he stands behind the camera too.

During early 2000’s, he has written scripts for a few television serials. While he was working in NEST Ernakulam, one of his colleagues Sudeendran from Iranjalakkuda has the habit to sleeping in train when he passes through Chalakkudy Bridge. He wakes up when he reaches Aluva Bridge. He has good knowledge of train timings as well. Ranjith was influenced a lot by his real life character a lot and when he portrayed the lead actor of ‘Passenger’ Sathyanathan, Sudeendran came to his mind. He weaved this character according to his colleague’s strange characteristics.
