Ranjini Biography

Ranjini is a former actress of Malayalam. She was active in the industry during late 80’s and early 90’s. Apart from Malayalam she has also acted for other South Indian language films. Yet she is most remembered for Malayalam movies – Chitram opposite Mohan Lal and Swathi Tirunal opposite Kannada actor, Anand Nag. Now she works as a joint director in an overseas education institution in Kochi, Kerala. She is a lawyer in profession and she was born to Selvaraj and Lilly Selvaraj in Singapore in the year 1970. Her birth name is Sasha Selvaraj. She has acted opposite top actors of Malayalam like Mohanlal, Mammootty, Suresh Gopi and Jayaram during the golden era of Malayalam 90’s.

As an actress Ranjini’s debut movie was Muthal Mariyathai directed by Bharathiraja. This great director of Tamil was a friend of Ranjini’s father and thus she was introduced to Tamil cinema. Swathi Thirunal, directed by versatile director Lenin Rajendran was her first movie. This critically acclaimed movie was released in the year 1987 which starred Kannada superstar Anand Nag as Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, ruler of Travancore, famous for arts and music. Ranjini played a dancer’s role in this movie, to whom Swathi Thirunal is attracted to.  

Yet the most memorable movie of her career is none other than Chitra, the comedy flick where she was paired opposite Mohan Lal. This movie broke many previous collection records and one among the earliest blockbusters of Mohan Lal. Its songs like Paadam poothakaalam and Doore kizhakkudikkum also became immensely popular during late 80’s. Before Chitram, Mohan Lal and Ranjini have together worked in the romantic comedy, Mukundetta sumitra vilikkunnu. This movie was also a big hit at box office.

She was paired opposite Mamootty in the movie Kottayam Kunjachan. This action thriller was also a big success and it was released in the year 1990. She has been paired successfully in many Jayaram movies of which Thoovalsparsham and Paava koothu need special mention. They have also acted together in Nanma Niranjavan Srinivasan, Custom’s diary and Varnam. She was also popular pairing opposite Suresh Gopi and Sai Kumar. Her other movies are Raja vaazhcha, Custom’s diary, Orukkam, Mukham, Kauthuka vaarthakal, Kaalal pada, Anantha vrithantham and Sandram.
