Ranjan Mathai Biography

Ranjan Mathai is currently the India's High Commissioner to the UK. He was the former Indian Foreign Secretary before Sujatha Singh who assumed the charge in 2013. He remained Indian Foreign secretary during the period, August 1, 2011 to July 31, 2013. On December 9, 2013 Mathai has taken over as India's next High Commissioner to the UK succeeding retired officer, Jaimini Bhagwati. Mathai was born in Thiruvalla, Kerala. Mathai is married to Geetha Mathai.

 

Mathai was born in Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta district of Kerala on 24 May 1952. His father, Thomas Mathai, was a senior faculty member at the National Defence Academy. His mother Sara was a teacher at Khadakvasla, Pune. Mathai took post-graduation in Political Science from University of Pune. After that he joined IFS. He is an Indian Foreign Service Officer from 1974 batch and has served in Indian Embassies in Vienna, Colombo, Washington, Tehran and Brussels. Later he served as Joint Secretary (BSM) in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi (1995 - 1998). During this period, he headed the Division dealing with India’s relations with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives.

 

During the period February 1998 to June 2001, he served as the Indian Ambassador in Israel followed by Indian Ambassador in Qatar during the period August 2001 to July 2005. Later a couple of years till year beginning of 2007, he held the post of Deputy High Commissioner of India to the UK in London. Ambassador of India to France just followed it. He took over the charge as Indian Foreign Secretary from Nirupama Rao, for a term of 2 years. Now he serves as the India's High Commissioner to the UK, assuming the charge most recently on December 9, 2013.
