Rangayana Raghu Biography

Rangayana Raghu is a popular comedian of Kannada films, who occasionally does both character and villain roles. He is best noted for his performance in the 2007 film Duniya which earned him the State Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2003, Mani earned him Karnataka State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. Appeared in over 160 films in comic or villainous roles mostly, he is best known for the roles he played in Mr 420, Director's Special, Romeo, Siva, Raam, Olave Mandara, Jayammana Maga, Gaalipata, Junglee, Modalasala, Milana and Paramathma.

He has been nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor 5 times – Cyanide (2006), Raam (2009), Modalasala (2010), Olave Mandara (2011) and Jayammana Maga (2013), and he won it for his first nomination only. He is also a recipient of multiple awards at South Indian International Movie Awards, Suvarna Film Awards and Udaya Film Awards for the character roles he played. He has been associated with the Rangayana theatre group since beginning. That’s how Rangayana tag got added to his name.

He was born on 17 April 1965 in Tumkur, Mysore. He started his acting career in 1988 as a theatre artist, when he joined the Rangayana theatre group. He worked on a monthly salary of rupees 800 in those days. 1995 ‘Suggi’ directed by Hamsalekha was his first movie; but the movie never got released. He started appearing in minor roles in the early 2000s – Aryabhatta, Kothigalu Saar Kothigalu and Dhumm. Yogaraj Bhat's debut directorial venture Mani was his big break to the acting career. He has worked with the same director several times later. He received critical acclaim for the movie - Director's Special, the movie which marked the acting debut of Dhananjay. He stole the show with his restrained performance.
