Ranee Narah Biography

Ranee Narah is an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress who currently serves as an MP of Rajya Sabha, representing Assam. She along with Ripun Bora got elected to Rajya Sabha in March 2016. She held the position of Deputy Chief Whip of the Indian National Congress in 15th Lok Sabha after 2009 general elections. A promoter of sports she also serves as Vice-President of the Assam Football Association and Assam Cricket Association. She is a board member of the Women's Committee of BCCI. She served as the Union minister of State for Tribal Affairs during 2012-2016, prior to her entry to Rajya Sabha. She got elected to Lok Sabha three times.

 

She was born on 31 October 1965 in Guwahati, Assam. She completed her studies from Guwahati. She is married to congress politician Bharat Narah. During her college days she was active in different forms of sports. She represented Assam in volleyball, weightlifting, shot put, discus throw, and cricket during her college days. Played domestic cricket for Assam, Ranee has played as team captain also. She was an all-rounder for the team. She retired from all forms of sports after her marriage in 1986. But she later served as an administrator of sports. She was the President of the Women's Cricket Association of India till it got merged with BCCI. Later she has held many senior positions as an administrator in sports.

 

She started her political career in 1995. Her growth in politics was rapid and she reached President of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress in a short interval of time. Three years later she contested in Lok Sabha elections for the first time. She got elected from Lakhimpur constituency in Assam. She has been elected to Lok Sabha two times later.
