Ramesh Chennithala Biography

Ramesh Chennithala is one of the young congress leader of Kerala. He is a Working Committee member of Congress Party and is the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Though Chief Minister and his team are interested in inviting him to the cabinet, he always stays away from it. He just wants to support the team from outside and strengthen the party by organizing the youth. On March 2013, he conducted a procession throughout Kerala to strengthen the party and it was accepted well by the people.

Most recently too, on July 2013, heavy talks and discussions were going on in the Party committee about giving this KPCC president, a vacancy in the cabinet. But Ramesh denied it politely. “I’m not joining the government, led by Oommen Chandy. I’ve conveyed my decision to the high command. There is no cabinet reshuffle in the state. My next duty is to strengthen the party for the Lok Sabha polls”, said Ramesh on this occasion.

Ramesh was born in Chennithala, Mavelikkara, Kerala as the son of Ramakrishnan Nair. He holds BA and LLB degrees. He was elected a Member of Parliament four times and Kerala Assembly elections thrice and was also a Kerala State Cabinet Minister at the age of 27 in K.Karunakaran's ministry. He first won in 1982 Assembly Election from Haripad constituency with 52.8% of votes gain for Indian National Congress party. He defeated Advocate P. G. Thampi of CPI (M). He repeated his win in the next elections held in 1987 from the same constituency defeating Prof. S. Thamaraksharan.

Then he created history by winning in Congress seat in Parliament Election successively for four times, 3 times from Kottayam (1989, 1991, 1996) and last one (1999) from Mavelikara constituency. Then for the last Assembly elections in 2011, he was elected from Haripad constituency defeating G. Krishna Prasad of CPI by 5520 votes.
