Rambriksh Benipuri Biography

Rambriksh Benipuri was a noted writer, playwright and poet of Hindi language from Bihar and he was a freedom fighter too. He was also a noted journalist and editor associated with many periodicals. As a journalist he played a good role to spread the idea of nationalism during British rule in India. "Shahido - tumhari yaad me" was a popular patriotic poem written by Benipuri. He was an eminent playwright known for the plays – Baiju Mama, Gaao Ke Devata, Sanghamitra, Ambapali, Sita Ki maan, Nayaa samaaj, Amar Jyoti, Shamshan me akeli andhi ladki ke hanth me agarbati (published in 2012), Vijeta, Netradaan, Tathaagat, Singhal Vijay, Shakuntala and Ramrajya.

 

He was born in Benipur Village, Muzaffarpur of Bihar in 1899. He was born in a Brahmin family. He was associated with freedom struggle movement as a poet as well as journalist. He had to spend 8 long years in jail for participating in India's independence and Non-Cooperation movement. As a journalist, he started several newspapers like Yuvak (1929). As a writer he was popular with long stories. His essays are equally popular. Ambpali is the work on famous courtesan Amrapali, who accepted Buddhism later. His noted play, Netradaan told the story of King Ashoka and son Kunal.

 

He is often ranked with his contemporaries, Makhanlal Chaturvedi and Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, who were journalists too apart from writers. His major memoirs and essays include - Janjiren aur deewaren, Zanjeeren Aur Deewaren, Maate, Udate Chalo, Udate Chalo, Patiton Ke Desh Mein, Chita Ke Phool, Lal Taaraa and Kaidee Ki Patni. Rambriksh Benipuri was also known as Kalam ka Jaadugar.
