Ramananda Chatterjee Biography

Ramananda Chatterjee is regarded as ‘The father of Indian journalism.’ He was founder, editor, and owner of Kolkata based magazine, the Modern Review. He is the author of ‘Towards Home Rule’, written in 1917 and has also served as a lecturer of several educational institutions.

 

Ramananda Chatterjee was born on 29 May 1865 in Bankura, Bengal of British India as the son of Srinath Chattopadhyay and Harasundari Devi. His native village was Pathakpara in the district of Bankura. His primary education was done in Bankura at a local school. He was interested in poetry at a younger age, particularly patriotic songs. He was drawn towards the poems of Rangalal Bandyopadhyay. . He passed the Entrance from Bankura Zilla School in 1883.  Then he reached Kolkata for higher education. In 1885, he passed the F.A. from the St. Xavier's College and joined City College. He was the first rank holder of University of Calcutta in 1888 and won the Ripon Scholarship of rupees fifty per month.  His professor, Heramba Chandra Maitra offered him the post of assistant editor at the Indian Messenger also. Maitra was then serving as its editor. Thus started his successful career in journalism.

 

In 1890, he became a postgraduate in English from University of Kolkata. In 1893, he joined the City College as a lecturer. He along with Jagadish Chandra Bose founded the children's magazine Mukul. In 1895, he left City College and joined Allahabad Kayastha Pathshala as lecturer. In 1897, he became the chief editor of Bengali literary magazine Pradip. He left it due to difference in opinion and started a new magazine, Prabasi in 1901. In 1907, he started English magazine Modern Review. In a speech on March 10, 1934, he summarized his view of the role of newspapering and how to gather data and put it on newspaper as information.
