Ram Shankar Biography

Ram Shankar is an Indian singer who sings light music, qawwali, and Hindustani vocalist. He shot to fame after his song, Yaaro Sab Dua Karo released in the late 1990s. The singer is still identified through this popular and touching Qawwali song, which also gave him a space among Sufi/Qawwali singers of the country. He is also a playback singer who rendered his voice for songs belonging to Bollywood movies like Dulhe Raja, Bichchhu, Aastha, Bal Bramhachari, Pardesi Babu, Janani, Jaanwar, Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni, Judge Mujrim, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Shyam Ghanshyam, Ek Hindustani, Haseena Maan Jaayegi etc. He also provided back vocals to movies like Sanwariya & Bombay in the background score. He is mostly associated with Qawwali, Sufi, light and classical genres of music.

 

Ram Shankar belongs to a family with music background. His father Shankarji & his uncle Shambhuji were renowned musicians and singers. The duo earned fame as "Shankar Shambhu Qawwal" in the second half of 20th century. Following their footsteps, Ram Shankar too chose music and his profession, and he was guided by his father and uncle who gave him music lessons in Hindustani as well as light music. Both these artists have inspired Ram a lot in his musical journey.

 

Ram Shankar gave his first public performance at the age of 10 at the famous Shanmukhananda Auditorium, Mumbai. Since that day he never looked back. Over the years he delivered more than 3000 shows in different parts of the country as well as abroad. He mostly performs Sufi songs, Ghazals, Bhajans & Qawwalis. In the 1990s and later he has released several music albums too. Some of them are Yaro sab dua karo, Yaar ka deedar chaiye, Tum Yaad na aaya karo, Yaar Bewafa, Kabhi Dil Roya Kabhi Hum Roye, Ye Hai Jalwa, Ishq Ishq, Mehfil, Re Deewani, Shaam-E-Saaki, Revolution, Ye Ishq hai etc.

 

He also composed music for TV shows such as Khatron Ke Khiladi, Arjun Deva, Dil Bhi Kya Cheez Hai, Jigyaasa, Ghazab Nagariya, Mahima Kashi Vishwanath Ki and Sparsh "the touch". He owns a production house in Mumbai - "Blessing Telemedia", and he plans to produce television shows. He is also a partner of AKS Entertainment, a Production, Distribution & Music Company, and owns a music academy - Viraasat Vocal Academy to promote budding singers. In fact he has given vocal training to many playback singers.
