Ram Prasad Bismil Biography

Ram Prasad Bismil was a patriotic poet and revolutionary associated with Mainpuri conspiracy of 1918 and the Kakori conspiracy of 1925. The most popular patriotic song of Indian freedom struggle movement - Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna is also attributed to him. This popular poem which inspired millions to join freedom struggle movement was penned by him. He wrote numerous patriotic poems in the pen names of Ram, Agyat and Bismil and he became most famous with the name Bismil. This great poet has also translated the books Catherine from English and Bolshevikon Ki Kartoot from Bengali. Bismil was one of the founder members of the revolutionary organisation, Hindustan Republican Association. He died on 19 December 1927 at Gorakhpur Jail, aged only 30.

 

He was born in Shahjahanpur in the year 1897. Apart from Hindi, he also learnt Urdu and English and he devoped writing poems at a younger age. He was inspired by the book, Satyarth Prakash, got associated with Arya Samaj during his college days and regularly attended its meetings. He also had a confidential connection with Lala Har Dayal. The death sentence of Bhai Parmanand, a famous scholar and companion of Lala Har Dayal angered him a lot and he started writing patriotic poems. ‘Mere Jaan’ titled in Hindi was his first poem. Later he wrote numerous poems with intense patriotic feelings, under different pen names. The Bolshevik Programme, A Sally of the Mind, Swadeshi Rang and Catherine are among his noted works.

 

All of his works are published under the title - 'Sushil Mala'. He was associated with Ashfaqulla Khan, Chandrasekhar Azad, Bhagawati Charan, Rajguru and many more and was praised by Bhagat Singh for his poetic talents.  He was associated with Manipuri Conspiracy of 1918. On 9th August, 1925 he was one among those revolutionaries who looted the money of the British government from the train while it passed through Kakori. He was arrested along with its group members except Chandrashekhar Azad and was executed on 19th December, 1927. Roshan Singh, Ashfaq and Rajendra Nath Lahiri were his associates who were executed the same day.
