Ram Naik Biography

Ram Naik was born in Atpadi in Sangli district of Maharashtra in a middle class family on April 16 1934. Ram Naik went to school in Atpadi and completed his graduation in commerce from Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce, Pune in 1954 and degree of Law in 1958 from Kishinchand Chellaram College, Mumbai.

Ram Naik was employed by the Accountant General Office, Mumbai as an Upper Division Clerk. Later he was promoted to higher posts as per the government rules and later worked as a Company Secretary and Management Consultant up to 1969. But he was interested in social work right from his from his childhood so he joined Rastriya Swayam Sevak Sangh as a Swayamsevak.

He was married to Kunda on 17 May 1960 and has 2 daughters. He has a family consisting of daughter Nishigandha Naik who is a biologist and his other daughter Vishakha Kulkarni who is also his personal secretary. It would be interesting to quote here that he suffered from cancer in 1993 but he fought the disease successfully.

Ram Naik was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a member of the Lok Sabha from 1999–2004. Ram Naik was central minister in Atal Bihari Bajpei' cabinet and held the Oil and Natural Gas portfolio. As a central minister he introduced the famous "Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme" which was appreciated largely.

 Ram Naik is also instrumental in forming "Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation" as Minister of State for Railways. He failed to win election of next Lok Sabha from Mumbai North losing to actor Govinda. Later he announced that he will no more contest in elections. He was nominated as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh in 2014.

Ram Naik did a lot of work for suburban railway commuters of Mumbai. In fact, he founding 'Goregaon Pravasi Sangh' back in 1964. He became Minister of State for Railways in 1998, he was also instrumental in establishing the Mumbai Rail development Corporation for providing better facilities millions of Mumbai commuters who were traveling in difficult conditions. Ram Naik also started the Ladies special Local Trains in Mumbai for the first time anywhere in the world.
