Ram Dulari Sinha Biography

Ram Dulari Sinha was a prominent politician, parliamentarian and cabinet minister from Gopalganj, Bihar. She was a freedom fighter too. One of the prominent female leaders from the state of Bihar, she was the first woman to get a Master’s degree. Also, she was the first lady governor of India from Bihar. She served as the Governor of Kerala during the period, 1988-1990. Ram Dulari was associated with both state level and national level politics. She has been elected as MLA of Bihar three times and has served as state cabinet minister once. Got elected to parliament thrice, she has also served as Union Minister under the ministry of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

 

She was born on 8 December 1922 in Gopalganj, Bihar. She was married to former parliamentarian Thakur Jugal Kishore Sinha, a member of first Lok Sabha. She has been associated with freedom struggle movement during her college days. After Indian independence, she became active in state politics as a politician associated with Indian National Congress. She was a member of Bihar’s first state assembly. She got elected to state assembly for the first time in 1952. In the early 1960s, she rose to prominence and successfully contested her first Lok Sabha elections Patna Lok Sabha Constituency. In 1969, she was re-elected to state assembly for the second term.

 

She served as a Member of Bihar Legislative Assembly till 1977, and held the position of cabinet minister as well. She served as the minister of Labour and Employment, Tourism, Sugar Cane, Social Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs in the government of Bihar. In 1980 she got elected to Lok Sabha from Sheohar and was inducted to cabinet of Indira Gandhi for the first time. She served as the Union Minister of State holding the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting, Labour and Rehabilitation, Industry, Steel and Mines, Commerce and Home Affairs. She got reelected from Sheohar and served as a cabinet minister of Rajiv Gandhi’s ministry.
