Ram Avtar Biography

Ram Avtar was a character artist of Bollywood mostly known for portraying comic roles. In a career spanning roughly 40 years, he mostly portrayed roles as a fat man with big stomach and mirthful demeanor which makes audience laugh. He was mostly active in the era of 1950s and 1960s. Tumsa nahi dekha, Phir wohi dil laaya hoon and Jab pyar kise se hota hai are some of his most special roles. He began his film career as a character artist in the late 1930s and slowly transformed to a comedian, owing to his body figure and strange mannerisms as a part of his obesity. He was last seen in 1981 movie, Prem Geet and the delayed release – Love and God in 1986.

Laughing passenger in Teesri Manzil, Gangu teli in Pagla Kahin Ka, Joy Mukherjee’s fat friend Kamala in Phir wohi dil laaya hoom, Fat Pickpocket in Phool aur pathar, Hotel Manager in April Fool, Subodh Mukherjee in Yadon ki baarat and Constable in 5 Rifles are some of those noted roles. Truth is that he is one among those forgotten faces of Bollywood in the 1960s and 1970s. He also played small roles in movies like Aaradhana, Laat sahib, Fakeer, Loafer, Amir Gareeb, Sadhu Aur Shaitaan, Guide, Leader, Nagin, Jhuk gaya aasman, Pyar ka mausam, Thodisi Bewafaii, Hungama, Patanga etc.

Ram Avatar was frequently featured in Nasir Hussain movies - Teesri Manzil, Yaadon Ki Baaraat , Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hun and Tumsa Nahin Dekha being the best instances. His gaining weight attributed a lot to make him a comedian of Bollywood in the 1960s.
