Rajnarayan Basu Biography

Rajnarayan Basu was a writer and intellectual of the Bengal Renaissance; one of the best known prose writers in Bengali in the 19th century. Basu was converted to Brahmoism at the age of twenty. Later, he was given the honorary title of Rishi. He was a great follower of Brahmoism and hence given the title, "Grandfather of Indian Nationalism". He was a regular columnist of Brahmoism journal, Tattwabodhini Patrika. Sri Aurobindo is his grandson. Basu was a close friend of prominent Bengali poet, Michael Madhusudan Dutt. He briefly tutored Rabindranath Tagore and in cooperation of Devendranath Tagore, he worked three years on the translation of Upanishads to English.

 

Brahmo Sadhon, Dharmatatvo Dipika, Hindudhormer srestotto, Sekal aar eikaal, Hindu othoba Presidency College-er itibritto and Bibidho probondho are his Bengali works. Rajnarayan Basur Attocharit is his Autobiography work published in 1909. A defence of Brahmoism and the Brahmo Samaj, The Adi Brahmo Samaj as a Church and The Adi Brahmo Samaj, its views and principles are his English books.

 

Basu was born on 7 September 1826 in the Borhal village of West Bengal, as the son of Nanda Kishore Basu, a disciple and personal secretary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy. His schooling was done at Hare School Society's School, Kolkata. He was noticed for his brilliance in studies since early childhood and during his schooling in Kolkata too, he gained appreciation from his teachers. Later Basu, with his great friend Michael Madhusudan Dutt introduced Western classical elements into Bengali literature.

 

He has also taught at Vidyasagar's Sanskrit College as the second master of the English Department. He later moved to Midnapore where he continued as a teacher. Later he served as the headmaster of Midnapore Zilla School also. He also established the first arch of women education in Midnapore, the first girls’ school and also a night school. He died in the year 1899.
