Rajkumar Kohli Biography

Rajkumar Kohli is a successful Bollywood director and producer, best known for the fantasy movies - Nagin (1976) and Jaani Dushman (1979), which were huge hits at box offices. Actor Armaan Kohli of Bigg Boss fame is his son. Though Kohli tried to launch him through Virodhi in 1992 and re-launch his career through Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani in 2002, both proved disastrous. Since then Kohli has not directed any movies. Apart from Bollywood’s best snake fantasy movies - Nagin (1976) and Jaani Dushman (1979), he has also directed multi-star cast movies like Naukar Biwi Ka and Raaj Tilak (1984), which were commercial hits. Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha,Reena Roy and Rekha were regularly featured in his movies.

Rajkumar Kohli was born on September 14, 1930. He started his film career in the year 1969 as a film producer. 1969 hit movie, Shart marked his career as a film producer. The movie was directed by Kewal Misra and stared the hot pair Sanjay Khan and Mumtaz in main lead. He continued his film career as a film producer till mid 1970s till made his directorial debut with Kahani Hum Sab Ki in 1973. Nagin in 1976 proved to be his big career breakthrough. This famous movie based on snake woman’s revenge was a mega blockbuster and a trendsetter of similar type of movies as well. The movie included an ensemble star cast of Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Feroz Khan, Sanjay Khan, Vinod Mehra, Kabir Bedi, Rekha, Yogeeta Bali and Mumtaz and it was Mumtaz’s last onscreen appearance before this star got permanently settled with married life. 

Kohli continued making snake stories and Jaani Dushman (1979) was also a blockbuster. In 2002 he directed another snake revenge story with the same title. But the movie was criticized for lifting scenes from Hollywood movies and was a flop at box office. In the 1980s he started copying other hit movies and received a major setback in his career.
