Rajkamal Chaudhary Biography

Rajkamal Chaudhary was a noted writer from Bihar. He was a poet, short story writer, novelist, critic and thinker in Maithili, Hindi and Bengali languages. He was known as "a bold leader of new poetry” and writer who "stands out differently" from most other experimentalists. He died on 6 July 1967 at a younger age of 37.

Raj Kamal was born at Rampur Haveli in North Bihar on 13 December 1929 as the eldest son of Madhusudan Choudhary, a noted scholar. People used to affectionately call him Phool Babu. He lost his mother when he was only 11 or 12. He spent his childhood in Mahishi village of Saharsa district and later moved to Jayanagar, Barh and Nawada along with his father. His father remarried a girl, almost the same age of Rajkamal. Rajkamal couldn’t accept that fact or could consider his stepmother as his mother. He never forgave his father too.

Rajkamal passed his matriculation examination in 1947 from Nawada high school in Bihar. As his relationship with father was tense, he moved to Patna and got himself admitted to B.N. College Patna in Bihar in Intermediate (arts) program. It was during this time when he got attracted to literature, painting and drawing. When his lover Shobhana moved to Bhagalpur, he too moved there and enrolled at Marwari College in 1948.  After many distractions he could complete his graduation only in 1954.

In 1951 he married Shashikanta Chaudhary with completion from family. Due to his responsibilities he started a government job at Patna secretariat in the education department. In 1956 he married Savitri Sharma of Mussoorie, but kept relationship with his first wife. Within one year of his second marriage, he got attracted to Savitri’s niece. Thus many women came in his life. Yet he regards his first wife as his real love. In Maithili he wrote nearly 100 poems, three novels, 37 stories, three one act plays and four critical essays. He wrote eight novels, about 250 poems, 92 stories, 55 essays, three plays and five regular columns in Hindi.
