Rajiv Menon Biography

Rajiv Menon is a successful cinematographer and director of Indian cinema, who concentrates most on Tamil cinema. He is known for directing critically acclaimed Tamil films like Minsara Kanavu and Kandukondain Kandukondain with music given by A. R. Rahman. His association with Mani Ratnam as a cinematographer is also famous. He is the son of south Indian playback singer Kalyani Menon. He started his career as a cinematographer. His debut movie was Prathap K. Pothan's Telugu film, Chaithanya. Mani Ratnam’s Bombay happened to be the milestone movie of his career as a cinematographer and after that Rajiv didn’t look back. Mani Ratnam’s Guru and Kadal are his latest works as a successful cinematographer. He started Rajiv Menon Productions and Mindscreen Film Institute. He has appeared in brief roles in Minsara kanavu and Malayalam movie, Harikrishnans. During his struggling days, in association with A. R, Rahman, he has done many jingles.

 

Rajiv was born in Kochi on April 20, 1963. After studies, he joined the film school to study cinematography and later started his film journey as a cinematographer. After Telugu movie Chaitanya, Bombay (1995) was his second movie. He has worked with critically well acclaimed directors like Shyam Benegal and Girish Karnad as a cinematographer. His directorial debut happened with Tamil movie Minsara Kanavu in the year 1996. The movie was dubbed into Hindi as Sapna. The movie was received well at box office; it received good critics’ response as well as 4 National awards, including best music and best playback singer, female. Its music was a huge chartbuster of the year.

 

His second directorial venture was multi-starrer Kandukondain Kandukondain released in the year 2000. Mammootty and Aishwarya Rai played leading roles while Ajith, Tabu and Abbas appeared in the supporting roles. Once again, history was repeated! The movie fetched National awards for best music as well as best playback singer, male (Shankar Mahadevan). Surprisingly, both the movies belonged to A. R. Rahman’s compositions. As a cinematographer, Rajinikanth’s movie, Kochodiyan is scheduled to release in 2013.
