Rajiv Anchal Biography

Rajiv Anchal is a screenwriter, art director and film director of Malayalam cinema. Till now 8 of his movies got released and his first project Australia – 1992 was abandoned. He is the director of the movie ‘Guru’ – India’s official entry in foreign category of Oscar awards in the year 1997. It was the first Malayala, movie to achieve this recognition. Before this movie, he has delivered a couple of commercial hits – Butterflies with Mohanlal in 1992 and Kashmeeram with Suresh Gopi in the year 1993. His last release was Paatinte Paalazhy in the year 2010, with Meera Jasmine and Manoj.K.Jayan in the leading roles. He has directed popular Tamil actor Madhavan in a Malayalam movie – Nothing but life, released in the year 2004. His other released movies are Rushy Vamsam (1999), Pilots (2000) and Beyond the Soul (2002).  His latest movies were based on US with English titles. He is the life member of - International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy.

Before renovating his career as a director, he was an art director of Malayalam movies. His most successful films as an art director are Adharvam (1989) and Njan Gandharvan (1991) and worked as art consultant for comedy flick of Mammootty, Manu Uncle in the year 1987. Njan Gandharvan (1991) is regarded as a classic and is still remembered for its beautiful direction, camera work and art. It was the last movie of director Padmarajan. He received the Kerala State Award for Best Art Direction for Njan Gandharvan. ‘Beyond the Soul’ won three awards at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival – for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature Film in 2003.

Rajiv started his direction career through the movie Australia in the year 1991. However the movie was not finished and he abandoned the project. Yet he included some of the racing footage originally shot for the canceled project in his second movie – Butterflies. This comedy thriller was a hit movie in Mohanlal – Jagadish combination and Tamil actress Aishwarya, daughter of actress Lakshmi debut in this movie. She played twin sister role in this movie. His last released movie ‘Paatinte paalazhy’ is about the story of a girl whose passion is singing.
