Rajesh Puri Biography

Rajesh Puri is a popular character artist associated with Bollywood and Hindi television. He is a theater artist too. He excels in comic and grey shaded roles. He studied at the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi. He started his film career in the year 1983 with the cult classic comedy - Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro by Kundan Shah. He essayed the role of Kamdar, the Assistant Editor in the film. Since then in the career spanning to more than three decades this accomplished actor has acted in more than 130 films and 70 tele-serials. Rajesh was also seen in the Punjabi romantic comedy film, Power Cut in 2012.

 

As a television actor, he gained early attention through DD shows, Yeh Duniyan Gazab Ki and Amrapali. He played the role of Lalit Prasad (Lallu) in the iconic TV series, Hum Log of Doordarshan. After this popular series which gave celebrity status to its actors, Rajesh Puri signed more than 30 films. Due to huge popularity, the series that ran twice a week during its initial days was later telecasted three times a week. His hilarious scenes – preparing and going to a job interview is still remembered by its fans. Rajesh was also part of Ramesh Sippy and Jyoti’s Doordarshan series, Buniyaad in 1986. He later directed one TV serial, Sohni Mahiwal for Doordarshan.

 

An accomplished theater artist, he is one of the founders of the Hindi theatre group, Ekjute. Till now Rajesh has done more than 5,000 performances in over 250 stage plays, and theater is his first love. His role as Pandit in Dil (1990) and P. A. of Dharamchand in Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991) are among his noted character roles on big screen. He shared screen space with noted film actor Alok Nath for many movies since 1980s.
