Rajendra Lahiri Biography

Rajendra Lahiri was a Bengali revolutionary associated with freedom struggle movement. He was hanged to death by British when he was found guilty in the notorious Kakori train robbery of 9 August 1925. He was one among the nine associates under the leadership of Bismil who robbed government treasury which was transported in the 8-Down Saharanpur - Lucknow passenger train by British. The other associates include - Rajendra Lahiri and Manmath Nath Gupta from Varanasi, Sachindra Nath Bakshi and Keshab Chakravorthy from Bengal, Chandra Shekhar Azad from Unnao, Banwari Lal from Rai Bareli, Mukundi Lal from Etawah and Murari Lal from Shahjahanpur. Majority of the members were caught and sentenced to death by British including Lahiri. Manmath Nath Gupta was sentenced to life imprisonment as he was a juvenile. He got released just before Indian independence.

 

Lahiri was born on 23 June 1901 in District Pabna of present day Bangladesh in a very rich family which owned many estates. His father Kshitish Mohan Lahiri was the Zamindar of Mohanpur who was involved in various developmental activities in Pabna. Dakshineswar bombing incident was one of Rajendra Lahiri’s earliest episodes associated with revolutionary movement in Bengal. During his post-graduation studies he was actively involved in many revolutionary activities of Hindustan Republican Association. He was well acquainted of the international Revolutionary Movements.

 

Later the organization felt the shortage of money to make bombs and other activities and it was their leader Ram Prasad Bismil who suggested to loot British money for their purposes. Under the leadership of Bismal, 10 revolutionaries looted the treasury that was transported in the 8-Down Saharanpur - Lucknow passenger train. But he was caught and was sentenced to 10 year imprisonment for bomb case of Dakshineswar and the new robbery case was also included. He was found guilty and was hanged to death on 17 December 1927. Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan – the masterminds behind this plan were hanged two days later. Bhagat Singh was so impressed from him that he named his youngest brother Rajinder.
