Rajatava Dutta Biography

Rajatava Dutta is a film actor associated with Bengali and Bollywood cinema. He mostly plays character roles. Among Bollywood film audience he is best known for playing the middle brother of the ‘mental’ Bengali underworld trio in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey. He was also noticed for his role as Emraan Hashmi’s Psychiatrist Dr. Ranjan Palit in the highly appreciated supernatural thriller film - Ek Thi Daayan (2013). Though appeared in a few Bollywood films, he is quite active with Bengali cinema. Natoker Moto - Like a Play, Badshahi Angti, Golpo Holeo Shotti, Open Tee Bioscope, Aschorjo Prodip etc are among his recent Bengali films. He is also a judge of Zee Bangla reality show Mirakkel.

 

He was born in Jessore, Bangladesh in 1967. He graduated from Netaji Nagar College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta in 1987. Though a Bangladeshi by origin he is associated with Indian movies. Since the completion of his graduation in 1987 he is quite active with theater. He has worked with many theater groups like Swapnasandhani before he made his film debut through the Bengali film, Ajab Gayer Ajab Katha in 1998. He was also seen in the English Indian film - Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002).

 

Started his film career as a junior artist in the late 1990s, his second credited role Paromitar Ekdin (2000) earned him BFJA Awards for best supporting actor in 2001. He played Rituparna Sengupta’s husband in the movie directed by Aparna Sen. Later he experimented with different kinds of roles and played the villain’s role in M.L.A. Fatakesto, which earned him appreciation and recognitions. Though the actor looks forward for some interesting roles from Bollywood, he is quite happy with Bengali films.
