Rajat Dholakia Biography

Rajat Dholakia is a National award winning music director of Indian cinema. He won National awards in the year 1991, for the Hindi movie – Dharavi. He is from Junagadh, Saurashtra origin. Though less in number, he has composed music for a few Hindi movies including – Mirch masala, Holi, Sunday, Firaaque and Tarpan. He has also done background score for a few movies and sound design. Delhi-6, 1942 A love story, Is raat ki subah nahi, Parinda and Maya Memsaab are a few noted movies in this collection.

Rajat graduated from Mithibai College of Arts and Science Mumbai, in 1977-78. Basics of music were taught to him by his father in his childhood. He also learnt from Shri Dilip Dholakia. He started learning Western music, Staff notation and arrangement of music from Pandit Ramprasad Sharma in the year 1973. Pandit Ramprasad Sharma is the father of noted Hindi composer Pyarelal Sharma. He started learnt Classical Guitar from his French Friend Mark Salaun and music composition and background music from the great film Arranger Shayamrao Kamble.

From 1975 onwards, he started giving music to theatre plays. He was introduced to FTII by great theatre cum parallel cinema artists, Paresh Mehta, Renu Saluja, Kundan Shah and Saeed Mirza in the year 1979. During this time, he started workshops and also gave experimental background music and sounds for the Diploma Films for FTII students. He started editing sound tracks for film documentaries, which proved great learning experience to him as a sound designer. Arun Khopker, Mani Kaul, Ketan Mehta and Viddhu Vinod Chopra were the film directors with whom Rajat’s association started as a sound designer. He worked for a few projects during 1980’s as well. He has been associated with parallel cinema most during these days. His friend Kiran Devhans introduced him to the Advertising world and afterwards, he has done more than 5000 ad films.
