Raj Singh Dungarpur Biography

Raj Singh Dungarpur was a former Indian cricketer who served as the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India. He was a member of Board of Control for more than 20 years, though has been in and out for a few times. He also acted as team manager of Indian Cricket team for a few tours, and also a selector. A legend administrator of Indian Cricket Board who was elected as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India for two terms, he also served as president of Cricket Club of India for 13 years in Mumbai.

 

As a cricketer, he played first class cricket for 16 long years. In the domestic cricket, he played 86 first class matched scoring 1292 runs in total and taking 206 wickets at a bowling average of 28.84. A few days before he passed away in 2009, he served as the team manager of Indian team for its tour to Pakistan. He was a bachelor, known as a traditionalist who dedicated his full life to cricket. During his last days he was fighting with Alzheimer's disease.

 

He was born into the royal family of Dungarpur in Rajasthan. He was the youngest son of Maharawal Lakshman Singhji, the ruler of Dungarpur. He had five siblings – two brothers and three sisters. Noted filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the Film Heritage Foundation is his nephew. Famous playback singer and melody queen Lata Mangeshkar has been a close friend of Raj.

 

As a cricketer he started his career in the early 1950s. He was a team member of Rajasthan and Central Zone and played during the period, 1955 to 1971. He was a medium pace bowler for his team. The matching winning spells of 7 for 88 and 5 for 55 in the match victory over Vidarbha in 1967-68 is his best performance.
