Raj Mehra Biography

Raj Mehra was a popular character artist associated with Bollywood oldies. In a career since 1950s to early 1990s, he played a variety of over 170 Hindi films. His best known works are Sharda in 1957 and Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai in 1960 and in both these movies he shared screen space with Raj Kapoor. He played the role of Raj Kapoor's father, Kasiram in 1957 movie, Sharda, for which he received Filmfare award for best supporting actor. His role as Police Superintendent in the family drama - Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai was also well received. The suspense thriller Woh kaun Thi, Sajan, Pyar hi pyar, Patthar Ke Sanam, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Neela Aakash, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai and Teesri Manzil are other noted movies.

 

Mehra handled serious roles most, though he has experimented serious roles with comic shades as well. He usually portrays a rich father in most of his movies. In most of his movies, he is seen as a rough and tough father who always hides his love and affection and often seen scolding his wife to spoil the child. He is also seen advising his son to join family business and allows him to go for a vacation at any tourist spot. May be a Bollywood formula, it has been repeated several times onscreen and Mehra has handled these situations repeatedly onscreen. 

 

Raj Mehra got associated with Hindi cinema in the late 1940s. Shaheed Latif's Shikayat (1948) marked his acting debut and with 1950s and 1960s, he rose to prominence as one of the leading character artists, versatile in handling police officer and father roles. He was associated with film industry till early 1990s. Aasoo Bane Angaarey (1993) was his last release.
