Raj Kapoor Biography

Raj Kapoor was an Indian film actor who has also produced and directed many films in the Hindi film industry. He was an award winning actor and his performance was praised by the film critics. He was born on 14th December 1924 in Peshawar in British India.

 

His parents are Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Devi Kapoor. He has four brothers among which two of them, Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kappor are actors and the other two died at their young age. His only sister was Urmila Sial. He studied at the Colonel Brown Cambridge School at Dehradun.

 

He married Krishna Kapoor. He was also suspected to have love affair with the actress Nargis with whom he had acted in a number of films. The famous films among them were Awaara and Shree 420. Randhir Kapoor is one of his sons who married the actress Bapita. Rishi Kapoor is also his son and he married Neeetu Singh. His third son is Rajiv Kapoor. Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor are his grandchildren who are also in the acting industry.

 

His debut film was Inquilab in the year 1935. He acted, directed and produced the films like Barsaat, Chori Chori, Jagte Raho, Awaara, shree 420, etc. Some of the films that he had acted include Jil Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai, Anari, Aashiq, Around the World, Diwana, Mera Naam Joker, Boot Polish, Aag, Jan Pehchan, Ashiana, Dhoon, Amber, Pyaar, Andaz, Paapi, etc.

 

He was nominated for Filmfare Award nineteen times and won the awards nine times. He got nominations for the Palme d’ Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his films Awaara in 1951 and Boot Polish in 1954. He received Padma Bhushan award from Government of India in 1971. He also received the Crystal Globe award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for his film Jagte Raho. In 1987 he received Dadasaheb Phalke Award and in 2001 Stardust Awards gave him Best Director of the Millennium award. Star Screen Awards gave him the title of the Showman of the Millennium in 2002.

 

He was suffering from asthma which led to his death on 2nd June 1988. During the awarding ceremony he was struggling to breathe and on seeing that President Venkatraman came down from the stage to give him the award amidst huge applause. He was taken to the hospital but could not be saved. His film Heena was released posthumously and was a huge success.
