Rahul Rawail Biography

Rahul Rawail is a Bollywood director known for launching new actors to Bollywood. Many of such actors have later become stars, the best instances being Kajol, Aiswarya Rai, Amrita Singh and Sunny Deol. Kajol debuted big screen through Rawail’s movie ‘Bekhudi’ while Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh had a magic debut through Bequdi, a blockbuster hit. Aiswarya Rai debuted Bollywood screen through ‘Aur Pyar Ho Gaya’ in 1997. Kumar Gaurav and Vijeta Pandit made an entry to Bollywood through mega-hit romantic movie ‘Love Story’. Rahul is the son of famous film director of yesterdays - Harnam Singh Rawail. Rahul’s son Bharat Rawail is an upcoming director who has assisted Yash Chopra for his last venture – Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

 

Rahul was born to H. S. Rawail, known for many evergreen hits like Mere Mehboob, Sangursh, Laila Majnu and Mehboob Ki Mehndi. Rahul debut as a film director in the year 1980. The movie was Gunehgaar followed by Biwi O Biwi. Both these movies were box office failures. However his third movie, Love Story proved to be the turning point of his career. Love Story with many chartbuster songs became one of the biggest hits of the year and successfully launched Kumar Gaurav as a romantic young hero. Since then, he has directed 17 movies and 2 television serials.

 

A hit maker in the 1980s, Rawail has been nominated for Filmfare awards twice – Betaab in 1983 and Arjun in 1985. Sunny Deol played lead role in both these movies. Rahul has played a significant role in making Sunny a star of 1980s. They continued their association in the 1990s for the movies like Yodha, Jo Bole So Nihaal, Arjun Pandit, Arjun Pandit etc. Jeevan Ek Sanghursh, Anjaam, Love Story, Betaab and Anjaam are some the hit films of Rahul.
