Rahi Masoom Raza Biography

Rahi Masoom Raza was a noted writer, lyricist, screenwriter and dialogue writer associated with Bollywood. He has also published a few works in Hindi. Chotey aadmi ki badee kahaani – is his autobiography work. He has worked with Yash Chopra in many memorable movies like Lamhe and his younger brother B. R. Chopra for the most epic serial on small screen – Mahabharata telecasted on Doordarshan in the early 1990s. He wrote the screenplay of this epic serial. Neem ka Ped – also needs special mention.

 

As a dialogue writer, his best known work is Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki in 1979, which starred Asha Parekh and Nutan in pivot roles and he won his first Filmfare award for best dialogues for the same. He was active in the film industry till his death in 1992. Rahi is one of the leading dialogue writers of Bollywood all time and has won 3 Filmfare awards as well. Gulzar is the only writer he has exceeded him in the number of Filmfare awards in dialogue writing category. Rahi won Filmfare awards for the movies – Lamhe (1992), Tawaif (1986) and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki in 1979.

 

He was born in Gangauli village of UP. He completed his school education at Ghazipur and later completed graduation from Aligarh Muslim University. He also took a doctorate in Hindustani Literature and chose literature as his career. He published many literary works including poetry, novels and autobiography and was also associated with Bollywood as a screenwriter and dialogue writer. He has been one of the top rated dialogue writers of Bollywood in the late 1970s till his death. His son Nadeem Khan has worked as a director and cinematographer of Bollywood and he is married to popular pop singer - Parvati Khan.
