Raghuram Bhat Biography

Raghuram Bhat is a former Indian cricketer who played in 2 Tests in 1983. He has also played 82 first class cricket matches and was one of the stalwarts of first class cricket for Karnataka. He retired after the 1992-93 pre-quarter final against Madhya Pradesh. He has been one of the successful bowlers of Karnataka Ranji team and has helped in winning many matches for his team, Karnataka. When he retired from first class cricket, he has already taken 343 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. His total first class wickets count to 374 and he managed to get only 4 wickets from 2 tests he played in international cricket for team India.  

 

Bhat was born on April 16, 1958 in Puttur, Mysore. He dominated school and junior level games and his performances helped him to reach Karnataka Ranji team. He debut in 1979-80 season against Tamil Nadu at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chennai where he took one wicket only. In the quarterfinal against Punjab he took 9 wickets and helped the team to reach the semifinals. Though he started with a slow pace, very soon he achieved success and became one of the leading players as well. In 1981-82 Ranji season he played an outstanding and match winning game against Mumbai in the semifinals. Mumbai team was powerful then with stalwarts like Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sandeep Patil, Ravi Shastri, Ashok Mankad and Balwinder Sandhu.

 

Karnataka lost the final to Delhi despite scoring 705 in the first innings. But Bhat became a part of Karnataka Ranji team next season and they defeated Mumbai in the finals. It was their third ranji Trophy win. His performance in the series gave him selection to National team where he got opportunity to play against Pakistan in two matches in 1983.
