Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Biography

Rafi Ahmed Kidwai was a politician, an Indian independence activist and an Islamic socialist. Barabanki of UP was his native place. He was the private secretary to Motilal Nehru and his son Jawaharlal Nehru. He joined Indian National Congress and took active part in Khilafat Movement. Kidwai entered politics through the Khilafat movement. He also played a significant role in Non-Cooperation Movement in Barabanki district.

He was born on 18 February 1894 in the village of Masauli in a middle class zamindar family. He had 3 brothers and Rafi was the eldest. He lost his mother during his early childhood. He received his early education from a tutor at the home of his uncle, Wilayat Ali. Later he studied at Government High School, Barabanki followed by Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College, Aligarh from where he took graduation. Though he enrolled for LLB, his association with Indian freedom struggle movement left his studies incomplete. It was during this time when he participated in khilafat and non-co-operation movements in 1920–21. He married Majid ul-Nisa in 1919. Their son died at a younger age.

Kidwai entered politics through the Khilafat movement. After his release from jail in 1922 he approached Nehru family and very soon became close to the family. Thus he became private secretary first to Motilal Nehru, then to Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1926 he was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly of British India. After the passage of the Government of India Act 1935, he held an office for the Indian National Congress. In between he has held several decorative positions. Alongside Govind Ballabh Pant, he was the leading figure in Congress politics in the United Provinces during 1930-31. In 1937, Kidwai became a minister for Revenue and Prisons in Govind Ballabh Pant's cabinet in the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. Kidwai was a major ally of Jawaharlal Nehru, after independence. Since 1956 Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award is given by ICAR once every two years to a scientist for his outstanding contributions.
