Rafeeq Ahamed Biography

Rafeeq Ahamed is a leading lyricist from Malayalam film industry at present. He is regarded as the most successful film-song writer for contemporary Malayalam films and a 5-time winner of Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyrics. He is a well-known Malayalam poet as well. He has won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry for Aalmara in 2006, and the prestigious Odakkuzhal Award for Rafeeq Ahammedinte Kruthikal in 2014. His work Paarayil Paninjathu earned Olappamanna Memorial Award in 2000. Edappally Award, Kunchupilla Award, Kanakasree Award, Vailoppilli Award, P. Kunjiraman Nair Award and Ulloor Award are other major awards received by him for his literary contribution.

He hails from Akkikavu, Thrissur. He was born to Syed Sajjad Hussain and Thithayikutty on December 17, 1961. He completed his graduation from Guruvayur, and was associated with poetry since younger days. He started his film career through the 1999 film Garshom, and since then he is regular in Malayalam cinema. As of now he has penned lyrics for about 100 Malayalam films, and most of his songs are indeed very popular. Mostly associated with poetry and songs, his first novel, Azhukkillam, was serialized in Mathrubhumi Weekly.

Since 2007, he bagged 5 of the 10 State film awards (best lyrics) announced. He won the award for the first time in 2007 for penning the songs of Pranayakalam. Oru Venalppuzhayil song became hugely popular among youngsters. He received the state award for Sufi Paranja Katha (2009), Sadgamaya (2010), Spirit (2012) and Ennu Ninte Moideen (2015) later. Ustad Hotel, Diamond Necklace, How old are you? and Oru Indian Pranayakatha are a few more works which bagged him awards at various award functions.

Perumazhakkaalam, Garshom, Trivandrum Lodge, Idukki Gold, Bombay March 12, Run Baby Run, Snehaveedu, Ee Adutha Kaalathu, Swapna Sanchari, Paradesi, Electra, Anwar, 22 Female Kottayam, Thirakatha, Rithu, Gaddhama, Salt N Pepper, 5 Sundarikal, Adaaminte Makan Abu etc are other memorable works. In fact he is the most sought and successful lyricist of Malayalam cinema in the present decade.
