Radhika Thilak Biography

Radhika Thilak was a popular playback singer and devotional singer associated with Malayalam. She passed away on 20 September 2015 aged only 45. She was suffering from cancer for the past two years. She is survived by husband Suresh and daughter Devika. Her husband runs an event management company. Though she has sung only a few songs (about 100) in 70 films in Malayalam cinema, she was quite engaged with her stage shows and devotional albums. She was one of the most sought stage singers of 1990s and 2000s and has been associated with playback singers like M. G. Sreekumar and Venugopal for several stage shows. A popular face of Doordarshan in the 1990s, she was also a noted TV anchor.

“Manasil Miduna Mazha of Nandanam”, "Arunakirana deepam" and "Deva sangeetham" of Guru, "Maya manchalil" of Ottayal Pattalam, Illoru malarchilla of Ente Hridayathinte Udama, “Thakil Pukul” of Ravana Prabhu, "Kaithapoo manam" of Sneham, "Thiruvathira thira nokkiya" and “Manjakkiliyude” of Kanmadam, "Ente ulludukkum kotti" and "Ninte kannil" of Deepastumbham Mahascharyam are some of her evergreen hits. Both the playback singers - Sujatha and Venugopal are her relatives.

Though she owned a sweet voice, she couldn’t find enough opportunities in Malayalam film industry at a time when artists like Chitra and Sujatha were at their career peak in the 1990s. Many times, her voice closely resembled Chitra’s voice. Though she had full potential she was also not among those artists who stuck doors in search of opportunities. She was happy with the way life has treated her. Truth is that music composers too didn’t use her voice in a better way. Though she stayed behind the shadows of Chitra and Sujatha, she gained fame and popularity as a stage singer and devotional singer.

Radhika thilak was born in 1969/1970. She was educated at Chinmaya Vidyalaya and St. Terasa’s college, Ernakulam. She won first prize in light music for college youth festival years ago. She gained attention through light music and later entered mainstream cinema as a singer. She was also associated with AIR. “Pulkodithumbilum” for the movie – Sanghaganam was her debut song. However the romantic "Maya manchalil" of Ottayal Pattalam (1991) was her first popular song. Later he sung for leading composers like Ilayaraja, Raveendran, Johnson, M G Radhakrishnan, Vidyasagar, Mohan Sithara, M K Arjunan and Sharreth.
