Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil Biography

Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil is an Indian politician who is active in state politics of Maharashtra. Patil currently serves as leader of opposition of Maharashtra since 2014. His father Balasaheb Vikhe Patil was also a social worker, politician and agriculturist honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2010. He was a pioneer in rural development. His brother Ashok Vikhe Patil is a leading educationalist and niece Nila Vikhe Patil is an advisor who works in foreign countries like Sweden. He is the grandson of famous industrialist and social worker, Vithalrao Vikhe Patil.

Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil was born into a family of social workers. He belongs to the third generation of social workers, and has a strong political background. His grandfather Vithalrao Vikhe Patil was an industrialist and social worker from Maharashtra best known for establishing Asia’s first sugar factory in the cooperative sector in India in the year 1948. He did so to help distressed, poor and uneducated sugar peasants from the exploitations of upper sections of the society and factory owners. Both his father and grandfather were honoured with Padma awards by government of India for their contributions towards social service.

Following the footsteps of his forefathers, he reached social service and politics, and later turned an influential leader of Maharashtra politics. Patil has been elected to state assembly multiple times. He also served as Minister of Agriculture and Marketing in Prithviraj Chauhan’s government and Minister of Educational and Transportation in the Government led by Ashok Chavan. He has been elected from Sirdi constituency in 2009 and 2014 and currently serves as leader of opposition. He is known as a strong leader for his brilliance as an opposition leader. Shalinitai Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil is his wife and he has one son.
