Radha Kishore Manikya Biography

Radha Kishore Manikya was the ruler of Tripura from 1896 to 1909. Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya belonged to the Manikya Dynasty. This great ruler has been described as one of the architects of modern Tripura. He had a close relationship with Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Ujjayanta Palace was built by Maharaja during the period, 1899–1901. He also supported Visva-Bharati University with an annual grant of Rupees 1000 which was a huge amount in those days.

 

He was a true believer of education and has been instrumental in setting up many educational institutions includes schools and colleges. R. K. I. school of Kailashahar and R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital were set up with financial assistance provided by him. He also introduced new Police system in Tripura state, separating it from Revenue Department. He also sponsored the scientific research of Jagadish Chandra Bose pleading his daughter in law's jewellery.

 

He was a benevolent and cultured man of refined tastes. He succeeded his father in 1896 and immediately faced a series of crises. He achieved political and administrative experience as chairman of the council of ministers formed by his father. An earthquake that happened in Agartala in 1897 shattered a large number of houses in the town including the royal palace. It was during a time when the royal family was going through crisis. After drawing a bank loan with the help of Rabindranath Tagore, he reconstructed a new palace at a cost of 10 lakh rupees. Ujjayanta Palace was built in the heart of Agartala city. He is also known for separation of Police and Revenue Departments and making them two distinct units.
