Rabri Devi Biography

Rabri Devi served as the Chief Minister of Bihar in India for three terms as the member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal party. She served in this post from 1997 to 2005. She is the wife of Indian politician Lalu Prasad Yadav who was the former Chief Minister of Bihar and former Railway Minister of India. She was born in the year 1959 in Salarkalan, Line Bazar, Gopalganj. Her father is Sib Prasad Chaudhary. She studied in the school at Gopalganj district. She married Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1973 when she was just 14. They have two sons and seven daughters.

She was appointed as the Chief Minister of Bihar. This was criticized by senior politicians of the nation as she was a traditional housewife and had no interest or experience in politics. This was considered to be the unexpected awkward decision in the entire political history. However she fitted well with the needs of the government in power. She was appointed in this post as Lalu Prasad Yadav who was serving as the Chief Minister had to quite the office on account of his involvement in Fodder scam.

She was the first woman Chief Minister of Bihar who started her tenure on 25th July 1997. Though Rabri Devi was appointed as the head of the state government, Lalu Prasad Yadav continued to act as a de facto chief minister of Bihar. Her first term ended on 12th February 1999 and the state was put under the rule of the president. Her second term started on 9th March 1999 and ended on 3rd March 2000 and her third term started on 11th March 2000 and ended in 2005. She lost in both the constituencies, Raghopur and Sonpur that she contested in 2010 elections.

She was nearly illiterate and had little experience in politics that she had to face severe satirical criticisms and stiff oppositions. The administration was actually carried out by her husband.
