Rabi Ray Biography

Rabi Ray is a former Indian politician who has been a parliamentarian, cabinet minister and speaker of Lok Sabha. A socialist politician, he has been associated with the political parties, Samyukta Socialist Party, the Janata Party and the Janata Dal. Before joining active politics he was a freedom fighter. He was elected to the 4th Lok Sabha from Puri constituency in Orissa in 1967 and 9th Lok Sabha from the Kendrapara constituency in Orissa in 1989. He also served as Rajya Sabha member from Orissa during the period, 1974-1980. He served as Union minister of health and family welfare in Morarji Desai Ministry from January 1979 to January 1980 in the short-term government.

 

Rabi Ray was born on 26 November 1926 in Puri district of Odisha state. He completed Master’s in History and also took LLB degree. He was associated with freedom struggle movement in the pre-independent period as a teenager. He flew National flag in Ravenshaw College while he was studying, for which he was arrested and jailed by British. He was influenced by socialist ideas and soon after Indian independence he joined Socialist Party in 1948. Since then he remained in the forefront of the socialist movement in Orissa.

 

He served as Joint Secretary, All India Samajwadi Yuvak Sabha in 1953-1954. He along with Rammanohar Lohia founded the Socialist Party in Orissa in 1956. He was the General Secretary of the Party in 1960. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1967 and since then he has served as a parliamentarian (both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) for multiple terms. He was a member of 4th, 9th and 12th Lok Sabha. Currently he is less active in politics.
