Raavu Balasaraswathi Biography

Raavu Balasaraswathi is a noted singer actress of south Indian films during the first phase of cinema. She predominantly worked in the period of 1930 to 1960s in Telugu and Tamil language movies. She entered film scene as a child artist. Raavu is regarded as the first playback singer of Telugu cinema industry. She also holds the distinction of the first Light music singer on All India Radio. Associated with many great singers and composers of the industry, Raavu is the living legend of Telugu entertainment industry. It’s a pity that her satin voice was not used effectively for Tamil cinema. Yet she has rendered her voice for about 50 Tamil songs.

 

Rao Balasaraswathi Devi is her full name. She was born on 28 August 1928 in Venkatagiri of Madras Presidency, British India. Now this place is located in Andhra Pradesh. She started her career as a child artist at the age of 6. She also recorded her first disc with HMV at this age. At the age of 8 she sang for two movies - Sati Anasuya and Bhakta Dhruva (1936). She also continued her career as a singing actress of Tamil and Telugu film industry, mostly for mythological movies. She marked history by playback singing for Kamala Kotnis for the Telugu film - Bhagya Lakshmi (1943) composed by Bhimavarapu Narasimha Rao. Thinne Meedha Sinnoda was that historic song.

 

Gradually she gave less significance to acting roles and concentrated to singing career. She also owns an illustrious career in All India Radio in the category of Light Music. She sang some memorable songs for Tamil film - Mangaiyar Thilakam and Telugu film - Manchi Manasuku Manchi Rojulu. She is currently settled in Hyderabad. She is a recipient of Ramineni Foundation Award.
