R. Parthiepan Biography

Parthiepan, also known as Parthipan is a famous actor, director, film producer and writer of Tamil movies. He is known for his versatility and natural acting skills. He has directed critically acclaimed Tamil movies like - Pudhiya Paadhai and Housefull and known for his best roles in movies like - Bharathi Kannamma, Vetri Kodi Kattu, Azhagi and Aayirathil Oruvan. He is now legally separate from his wife Seetha, an actress of Tamil movies. Their daughter Keerthana has worked in Mani Ratnam’s critically well acclaimed movie – Kannathil muthamittal as young Amutha, for which she won National award for best child artist.  He has also appeared in Malayalam movie – Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2000), the debut movie of actress Asin. Now he is working in a series of Malayalam movies as well.  

Parthiban (Parthiepan) was born in a middle class family in Chennai. His father was a clerk of Post and Telegraph department. He completed his schooling from Hindu Higher Secondary School in Triplicane. He associated himself with amateur plays and used to visit offices of producers and directors of Chennai in search of an opportunity. He started his career as a dubbing artist and then began to do bit roles. His first film was Dhavani Kanavukal, where he played the role of a postman. He has also worked in Ranuva Veeran (1981), but his role was uncredited.

In 1989, he started his career as a director directing the movie - Pudhiya Paadhai. He was its leading star and script writer also. In this movie, he worked opposite Seetha (his future wife). The movie won many awards including National Award for Best Regional Film and Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Story Writer. After that, he never looked back. In 1999, he repeated the history by accumulating awards for his venture – Houseful. He was the producer, director, scriptwriter and leading actor of this movie. It won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Director and Tamil Nadu State Film Special Award for Best Film.

In 1997, he won Tamil Nadu best actor award for Bharathi Kannamma and 2010, won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Tamil for Aayirathil oruvan. As an actor other memorable movies are – Pachchak Kuthira, Ivan, Vetri Kodi Kattu, Sabhash, Unnai Vaazhthi Paadugiren, Abhimanyu, Swayamvaram, Anthapuram, Sugamana Sumaigal, Ulle veliye and Vaimaye Vellum.
