R. Madhi Biography

R. Madhi is one of the leading new-generation cinematographers of the south Indian film industry at present. He predominantly works in Telugu and Tamil film industry. Veyil, Paiyaa, Pandianadu, Mirchi and Srimanthudu are his best works up-to-date. Known for his successful association with Telugu film director Sujeeth Reddy since his debut film, Run Raja Run, Madhi is to handle the camera work of 150-crore multilingual film starring Prabhas, Saaho. The movie starring Prabhas in the lead is already in spotlight for the past few months post Baahubali-2’s success and trailer release. He has worked in Bollywood as well, and critically appreciated Shaitan and The Ghazi Attack are his noted works.

R. Madhi hails from Nannilam of Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. He was born into a big family of 10 siblings. He has 7 brothers and 2 sisters. One among his brothers, Piraisoodan is a Tamil poet and lyricist who writes song lyrics for films. Piraisoodan is a winner of 3 state awards for best lyrics. R. Madhi completed his graduation in Mathematics, wanted to become a restaurateur and landed himself to a field of art and entertainment.

He is associated with cinema as an independent cinematographer since 2002 though he rose to prominence in the recent times. He started off as an assistant of noted cinematographer Saravanan. Punnagai Desam in 2002 marked his debut as a cinematographer. Associated with Tamil cinema for nearly 8 years, he moved to Tollywood and Bollywood movies since 2011. Veyil and Payya were his noted works in Tamil in between.

In 2011 he marked his Bollywood debut through critically appreciated Shaitan and in 2013 he marked his Telugu cinema with Mirchi starring Prabhas. Since then he is regular with Telugu film industry. Manithan and Jeeva are his recent works in Tamil. In 2017 he received one of the biggest projects of his career, Saaho, the movie that is to be made in three different languages.
