R. G. Bhandarkar Biography

Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, popularly known as R. G. Bhandarkar was an Indian scholar, orientalist, and social reformer. He was one of the social reformers behind the formation of the Prarthana Samaj. He is known for oriental studies. In 1911 he was knighted C.I.E. Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute of Pune is named after R. G. Bhandarkar. He has served as Council of India in 1903 as a non-official member. He was one among the first graduates of Bombay University, aside another social reformer Mahadev Govind Ranade.

 

Bhandarkar was born in Malvan in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on 6 July 1837. His schooling was completed at Ratnagiri itself. Later he studied at Elphinstone College in Mumbai. He was one among the first graduates in 1862 from Bombay University. He became a member of the Paramhansa Sabha in 1853 while a student. After post-graduation, he took Ph. D from University of Göttingen in 1885. After completion of studies, he lectured at Elphinstone College and Deccan College for many years. He conducted researches and published several works during this period. He retired in 1894 as the Vice Chancellor of Bombay University.

 

He attended the international conferences on Oriental Studies held in London (1874) and Vienna (1886). As an educationist, he was elected to the Council of India in 1903 as a non-official member. Bhandarkar was knighted C.I.E in the year 1911. He became a member of the Paramhansa Sabha while at college and visits from Keshub Chunder Sen in 1864 inspired the members of the organization. In the year 1866 in a public meeting took a public pledge. Widow remarriages, abolition of child marriages, education of ladies and denunciation of the caste system were included in the agenda.  Later they reached a conclusion that religious reforms is the basis for social reforms which eventually led to the formation of the Prarthana Samaj.
