R. Amarendran Biography

R. Amarendran is a highly acclaimed theatre artist known as a stage director and actor. He also plays supporting roles in Tamil movies. His stage plays are in English and French, and staged in Chennai and Pondicherry and other locations. He started off his film journey in 2010 playing villain’s role in Bale Pandiya. Since then he is regularly associated with Tamil cinema. He played the noted role of Velu in Rajinikanth starrer Kabali in 2016. Most recently he played the character role of Shankar in Tamil blockbuster Vikram Veda. The film was lauded for its performance by lead and supporting cast. Jil Jung Juk, Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thorae and Yatchan are his other recent works.

 

His full name is Amarendran Ramanan, and he is also called as Amar by his close friends circle. He started his association with theatre as an actor in 1984, and since then he has been fully active in the field. Slowly he moved into direction field as well, and many of his plays are critically acclaimed. His plays are mostly staged in English and French, and he regularly stages his plays in major plays like Goa and Chennai. As an actor he closely worked with many theatre groups for many years.

 

In 1989 he represented India at L'ecole Nationale d'art Dramatique at the Theatre National de Strasbourg in France, and was one among the four selected members who received training and opportunity to appear in a French play staged at many cities. In 1992 he founded the Theatre Arlequin which produced French and English plays, and he staged more than 25 plays up-to-date. Though he has been fully active in Indian theatre circle, he made his film debut only in 2008. He played a brief role of a school teacher in Academy winner, Life of Pie.
